Tucked into the Gateway of the Lakes, Stonecrest Shores offers small-town charm and Old-World nostalgia with its paved brick streets and historic traditions in Leesburg, Indiana. The cobblestone roads welcome visitors all year long, especially on Memorial Day and Fourth of July where brilliant fireworks are displayed over Lake Tippecanoe. The well-maintained elegance and large lake frontage with a fantastic view are key selling points that will entice the imagination of any potential buyer.”

Established in 1994, Arch-Interiors is internationally recognized for its elegant, customizable beautification of residential and commercial spaces. Chris Grubb is the company’s fearless leader; he’s the president of the Beverly Hills-based group, and has led the team to accolades such as Los Angeles’ Top 10 Interior Design Firms list, and an entire 70-page issue of World Architecture Magazine in Hong Kong solely dedicated to their work. Grubb specializes in kitchen makeovers: taking a desolate home space and turning it into pure magnificence.

From Mid-Century to Timeless

In this 1959-built home, the original kitchen was narrow, compartmentalized, and out of style. Grubb noted that in the kitchen layout, function and aesthetics were beyond outdated for their modern needs. There were difficulties at first: the laundry room was located in the kitchen, and there wasn’t much access to windows to pull together the space.

In order to remedy this, the team’s idea was to extend the kitchen space, and to add in floor-to-ceiling windows to feel connected more with the outdoors. The clients desired a crisp, elegant and timeless look, and Grubb felt this could be accomplished in a few different ways.

First, the floor-to-ceiling windows allowed for a greater appreciation of the scenic landscape from the kitchen. They installed custom cabinetry in both dark and warm grey tones, which complement each other and the grey veined countertops.

By creating the illusion of a larger space, the clients were wowed by their new, dream kitchen.

Reimagined on Rodeo Drive

This kitchen is home to a family of five, who were looking for a larger and more modern space. They desired various improvements: an expansive kitchen island, updated appliances to meet their Kosher lifestyle, an ability to flow into the next room, and a more comfortable area for entertaining.

In order to accomplish this, team members first “pushed out” an existing wall to increase the square footage and summon in more natural light. They installed double doors connecting from the kitchen to the den, ushering in a more cohesive space.

Storage was also important for this family, especially to hide the original placement of unattractive piping and air ducts. To bring in an updated appeal to the decor, Grubb and the team introduced porcelain tiling with linear cuts, and a ceramic harlequin-pattern backsplash.

Lastly and of most interest to the family, the team pulled off a gorgeous, vast kitchen island. Grubb calls the island a “furniture-style design, ornate with sumptuously carved legs,” giving the island the feel of a furniture piece.

Ultimately, the family was very integrated and passionate about this project, and was impressed with the end result.

Astrotourism

astrotourism

By Marlene Ridgeway

Though the privately funded commercial space age has created significant waves, the night sky has captured human interest long before the advent of space tourism. New technologies are making the idea of space — once inaccessible and foreign — more attainable, and now the hospitality industry is striving to offer elements of “astrotourism” for guests. One example is the Montage Healdsburg in California.

“It is not surprising to see the interest in exploring the universe is taking hold,” says Jennifer Chiesa, the director of public relations at Montage Healdsburg. “While we can’t offer to take our guests to space directly, we can help encourage the interest in astronomy and hopefully bring faraway galaxies just a little bit closer to all of us here in Healdsburg.”

What is Astrotourism?

Astronomy has met the tourism industry to create the idea of astrotourism. According to Wendy Altschuler, a contributor at Forbes, astrotourism is “purposely traveling to nature-rich destinations that experience less light pollution,” which allows travelers to view the stars more easily. Visiting observatories and chasing dark-sky certified parks are all part of this growing industry.

For those interested in the mysteries of the night sky, there are elaborate and simple ways to experience these wonders.

From stargazing on paddleboards and global partnerships with private aviation, to at-home observation stations, there’s more than one way to glimpse the marvels of the night sky.

Astrotourism Adventures

There’s something about the night sky that evokes a sense of wonder. Psyched Paddleboarding, which is based on the Isle of Anglesey in Northern Wales, has been offering guided night tours for over seven years now. “Our customers love being guided by a magical moonlight and starry sky for an adventure after dark,” says the founder, Sian Sykes.

Named by The Guardian as one of the Top 12 best nighttime activities in the United Kingdom, paddleboarders have been fortunate enough to see up to 25 shooting stars while floating on the water. Paddleboarding and other types of boating at night are an excellent ways to disconnect from the modern world and reconnect with history and nature.

For other nighttime adventures, the Vista Series houseboats are the perfect way to explore the Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The park recently earned the coveted International Dark Sky Association’s dark-sky park certification, which makes stargazing and views of the Milky Way simple. Bordering Saudi Arabia, Qatar’s Desert is “a perfect spot for astronomy enthusiasts to observe the dark and starry skies,” says Berthold Trenkel, the chief operating officer of Qatar National Tourism Council about the exclusive astrotourism experiences that have been organized in partnership with Gulf Adventures. The options range from stargazing with an experienced astronomer, camel safaris by moonlight, and other excursions that involve deep exploration of the skies.

Starry Destinations

The Montage Healdsburg’s exclusive package, The Sky’s the Limit, was articulately designed as an opportunity for guests to engage with nature and experience the splendors of the starry sky. “We thought getting outside in the fresh air, exploring, and looking upwards at the vast universe seemed like a fun and educational activity that the whole family could enjoy together,” explains Chiesa. “The package brings together the best of the valley and beyond to include: private roundtrip flights, and airport transfers from anywhere in the United States with leading global private aviation company, Jet Edge.”

With ease, guests can book two nights in the resort’s luxury guesthouse, taking advantage of the mountain and vineyard views with minimal ambient light — all of which makes for prime stargazing and exploring the night sky with your own telescope, according to Chiesa. “There’s also a professional photography session with award-winning astrophotographer Rachid Dahnoun, whose specialty includes nighttime photography, and access to the Robert Ferguson Museum and observatory.”

space tourism

More and more resorts and hotels around the world are offering elements of astrotourism as interest rises. The Leobo Private Reserve in South Africa offers the Waterberg Observatory, which is part of the main house, and astronomy tours with telescopes and space suits. Or enthusiasts can book a room at The Torridon, in the Northwestern Highlands of Scotland, for an incredible stargazing experience. The luxury boutique resort is considered one of the darkest places on earth and is unparalleled when it comes to stargazing.

Guests can enjoy excursions, presentations, and the chance to meet astronomer Stephen Mackintosh.

Astronomy At Home

Although the subject of interest is lightyears away, new technology has simplified astronomical adventures, even from the comfort and safety of your home. “With the current health crisis that has shaken the world, sales of astronomical instruments have never been stronger,” says Cyril Dupuy, founder of Vaonis. The company was created in France in 2016, and the hope was to revolutionize the world of amateur astronomy, by making it accessible to all.

“There’s a desire for a return to nature. Individuals have a longing to escape, in complete safety.” Stellina and Vespera are two observation stations that are small but powerful at-home devices for amateur astronomers.

Paired with an easy-to-use app, users do not need a deep knowledge of astronomy or experience with stargazing to partake. Stellina and Vespera will allow users to observe and explore on their devices, and within minutes they can unveil the hidden wonders of the night sky.

Keep Things Sophisticated

Marissa Stokes

By Kristen Ordonez

For designer Marissa Stokes, home has been a variety of places. Home was growing up in New Jersey, where creative parents and a need for change led to an intense love for interior design at a young age. Home was also New York, where she earned a degree from Parsons School of Design and worked her first jobs at elite design firms, including David Kleinberg Design Associates, Victoria Hagan Interiors and Jayne Design Studio. And now as an accomplished designer, home is more than just a place — it’s every threshold she passes, every piece of furniture she chooses, every decision she makes in order to help craft the perfect space for her clients. We spoke with Stokes about her experiences in the industry and how her love of interior design has transformed her career so far.

How do you think living in New York affected your design style and preferences?

You’re just exposed to so many amazing things, being in and around New York City. The architecture alone, having incredible museums at your fingertips. I also went to school in NYC; I think that was an incredible experience, but also had a huge influence on my design aesthetic, just having everything at your fingertips, between different cultures, food, architecture. I feel fortunate to have lived there and so close to there still now. I love New York City.

When was the first time that you ever thought about working in design?

I really have always wanted to be an interior designer from a very young age…. I think it’s because my parents are both very creative people, always doing things to improve our home…. My dad made furniture, we even had a woodshop in our basement. I just had this love for transforming spaces and the process, and I just fell into it very naturally.

Did you learn wood craftsmanship yourself?

Yes! I had all the tools at my fingertips in the shop, and I am still able to use them now, a bandsaw, a tablesaw, et cetera. We also had a sewing machine, so I grew up sewing at a young age — we’d be making window treatments and pillows. I was always transforming my personal space, shifting things around, changing them or painting them. Making them look different. It was just something I always loved to do, and still love it.

Why do you do what you do, what about art and design draws you into doing it every day?

I love making people’s dreams come true. There’s something so rewarding about helping a client transform their space so it’s not only functional, but beautiful. In terms of art and design, there’s so many artists and creatives out there who are doing incredible work, and I’m being exposed to them, just learning and growing. It’s another reason why I love what I do. Every day is different and I just love that.

Are there any activities outside of work that help inspire you or your work?

Outside of work, I’m always trying to get out in nature, go for a walk or hike – nature is always inspiring. I feel like I can always pull things from that. I love to travel as well, even though it’s been a bit difficult to do so.

Where’s somewhere you love or would love to go?

My dream place I’d love to go is Greece. It really offers everything. It has ancient and historical sights, of course, but also beautiful landscapes and amazing food.

What has been your favorite project to do?

I worked on a project for Jayne Design Studio in Palm Beach. It was my first project as a senior designer for the firm. It’s a Venetian-inspired home on the Intracoastal. The clients were art collectors who wanted to enjoy the views and display their art. We designed and decorated a home that was quiet, clean and sophisticated to balance their collection and the architecture. I loved the home, its location and the clients. I will always have a soft spot for it.

When it comes to designing, what is the most important element you have to remember?

Well one thing that tends to be overlooked, I think, is the ceiling. It’s very important to design from top to bottom, to think about ceiling work, a lighting plan, and overall how it’s treated and how it affects the space.

Is there a piece of art in your own home that you would never consider selling?

Everything is here for a reason, so not one specific piece. It’s always important to surround yourself with things you love, even if it’s a bit eclectic, surround yourself with furniture and art that you love. When you do that, things just kind of work together. There’s no standard.

What do you want people to take away when they look at your work?

I want people to find it classic and timeless, something that could last forever. I don’t want someone to walk into a space and instantly date it. I want the clients to be comfortable in their home for a long time.

Keep things sophisticated.

What advice would you give to someone going into design?

Don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves, you have to wear a lot of hats in this industry. Maybe start with an internship, but, all in all, do whatever you need to do to learn.

6.25 Acres of Excellence in Scottsdale

This estate is a beautiful expression of ranch hacienda-style architecture. Designed by acclaimed architect John Sather of Swaback Partners, it was built with the highest quality materials and workmanship, and every room reflects extraordinary attention to detail. Nestled on six acres on the side of the McDowell Mountains – and backing onto a nature preserve – the property is truly a mountainside sanctuary that offers both privacy and an organic connection to the Sonoran Desert.

The entrance speaks volumes about what’s inside. The imposing arched front door with seeded-glass panels was custom crafted of reclaimed materials by La Puerta of Santa Fe, and the two-story entryway features a commanding chandelier fabricated by the trade-only designer Paul Ferrante. The hardwood floors in the house are made of distressed hickory, and they perfectly compliment the artisanal plasterwork on the walls. Imported from Italy, the Albertini windows and glass-paneled doors, with their rich burnt-pine finish, are another strong design element. Tucson-based Taber & Co. made the bespoke in-wall mesquite cabinets in the living room, and the custom interior doors are also solid mesquite.

Attention to detail is found throughout. The twin custom granite sinks in the kitchen feature integrated drain boards chiseled into the countertop – no dish racks needed. To reduce back strain when rolling dough, chopping vegetables, or doing other prep work, the center island was set at an above-standard 42” height. Electric outlets throughout the house were faux painted to match the surrounding walls and backsplashes. The three decorative panels on each interior door were deliberately sized so that the door lever is perfectly centered on the door rail. And the massive living room fireplace surround was entirely assembled from book-matched marble slabs, to stunning effect.

Many of the rooms are worthy of special mention. Befitting a movie producer who wants to experience films in the best possible way, the 10-seat tiered theater is equipped with state-of-the-art projection and sound systems designed by Shen Milsom & Wilke, a world-class engineering firm. Next to the theater on the lower level is a 2,000-bottle wine cellar, whose rustic stone walls help maintain ideal temperature and humidity levels for long-term storage. Also on the “play” level is a game room that can accommodate all sorts of toys, which currently include a pool table, juke box, Skee-Ball alley, Harley-themed pinball machine and poker table.

The spacious Primary Suite was designed to achieve just the right balance between privacy and togetherness. The suite has a common bedroom but completely separate dual bathrooms and dual closets. The suite also includes a room for luggage storage and a private patio with a fireplace and whirlpool.

Located in a stand-alone structure a little further up the mountain, the Spa is another noteworthy space. On one side is a fully equipped exercise room with wall-to-wall French doors and transom windows that wash the room with light and offer lovely views of a desert garden. On the other side is an intimate massage room with an exquisite domed mosaic ceiling.

How many homes have an ADA-compliant bedroom suite? This one does. All of the light switches are set at ADA height, the bathroom vanity is ADA accessible, and there are grab bars at the commode and in the shower. A commercial-grade elevator serves all three floors and is also ADA-compliant.

The exterior spaces are equally impressive. Berghoff Design Group did the landscaping, which features a virtual arboretum of mature, thriving ironwood, palo verde, mesquite, and Texas ebony trees, all native to the Desert Southwest. These trees form a natural canopy and add to the overall sense of privacy which characterizes this property. The fountains are genuine antiques, and an inviting bougainvillea-lined walkway made from reclaimed stone leads to the main entrance.

This magnificent heritage home is one of Toronto’s most prestigious addresses.

It was built in 1901 with traditional red brick, stone, and wood detailing. The details maintain the striking Queen Anne Revival styling done by the prolific Toronto architect C. J. Gibson. It was thoughtfully restored from 2017-2021. The home rests on a 43-by-106-foot corner property.

The Victorian exterior and remodeled interior are up to today’s standards. “Shumacher designs intentionally designed the interior to reflect its heritage with a seamless, well-thought-out modern décor,” says Egan.

The home also includes a glass wine cellar, gas fireplaces, spa-style baths and a private patio with built-in grill.

The home is listed for $12.995 million and is perfect for “a family looking for a magnificent and rare downtown estate in the heart of the most sought-after locations in Toronto,” says Egan.
