Dramatic spaces illuminated by skylights and walls of glass evoke the height of International Style, while a simple, dark material palette of raw steel, hardwood and crisp white walls provides a unified backdrop in this stunning remodel of an existing house in the Capitol Hill neighborhood by renowned architect, Tom Kundig. Bringing light into the home and creating a stronger connection to the outdoors were important aspects of the renovation, and in addition to extensive skylights, the rear of the house was transformed with the addition of a 10’x10’ custom designed jalousie window, and large sliding and pivoting windows and doors which afford a living experience that is at once clean and modern, yet organic and sculptural. A custom designed “kuruma” functions as a rolling office that reflects a modern interpretation of a traditional wheeled storage chest. The lower level features a complete MIL unit that has a private entrance and is ideal for use as a self-contained home office, staff or guest lodging or as an autonomous rental, making this exceptional work of residential art a highly practical and adaptable choice for modern in-city living.
